About The Conference

Developing an efficient sustainable agriculture system in the current context of major global threats like climate change, soil degradation, water scarcity, biodiversity diminution, coupled with food crises and malnourishment due to continual population growth represents an imperative idea for conceiving a coherent strategy aimed at ensuring food, feed, fiber and fuel security. India is one of the leading developing countries making noticeable economic progress through its industrial and agricultural development programs. Agriculture is the major source of livelihood for nearly 60% of population in India and accounts for approximately 18% of GDP share annually. The desired potential of agriculture sector in India has yet not been tapped to its maximum due to some major bottlenecks like lack of resources such as water, nutrients and good quality planting material, improper management of pests & diseases and poor post-harvest management of the produce. Biotechnology has the potential to assist farmers in meeting the growing demand for food by improving yield as well as nutritional quality of crops and reducing the level of chemical inputs. We will be able to produce the food needed to feed the growing population globally that will reach 10 billion by the year 2050, only by the amalgamation of latest technologies complementing conventional breeding strategies. Our research therefore, needs to be re-oriented towards exploring new Bio and Nano technologies so as to extract the maximum benefit and to minimize the risks in term of environmental hazards as well as human health risks.

Biotechnology without a doubt has also played a dynamic role in improving the overall human health by providing nutritionally enriched genetically modified crops and decreasing the dependence of crop production on toxic pesticides. We today are able to get increased yields by growing varieties that are resistant to various biotic & abiotic stresses thereby preventing the economic loss. In the area of health & medicine, some of the prominent achievements of pharmaceutical biotechnology are the development of monoclonal antibodies, drugs, diagnostic kits, vaccines & gene therapy.

Renewable technologies are considered as clean sources of energy and optimal use of these resources minimize environmental impacts, produce minimum secondary wastes and are sustainable based on current and future economic and social societal needs. Numerous strategies have evolved by which biotechnology is being used to create improved biofuels products or processes, involving the creation of engineered or synthetic microorganisms for use in production of ethanol, biodiesel or other fuels, or genetically engineered plants as improved fuel feed stocks. Ground level research has led to structural changes at the Industry level too which has matched its pace with latest discoveries. During the past few years, several biotechnology companies like DuPont, Bayer, Monsanto have been established and begun mergers with pharmaceutical giants.

Taking a leap ahead, nanotechnology is the science that is making giant impact at nanoscale level. Nanotechnology exploits the fact that properties of a material at nanoscale is far different from what it exhibits at macro level and has employed the successful use of nanomaterials in the fields of environmental science, medicine, agriculture and medical tools. Some of the ways by which nanotechnology is aiding agriculture & human health includes the use of nanofertilizers and nanopesticides that are more efficient & less polluting, accurate monitoring of nutrients, purification of contaminated water &soil. Nano technological products, processes and applications are contributing significantly in the area of medicine via targeted drug delivery, increased bio-efficacy & minimum toxicity. A number of nano devices in the form of nanochips are already in the market for genomic selection, diagnostics, etc. It will not be an exaggeration to state that Bio & Nanotechnology has provided us with the solutions to many problems and their contribution is expected to grow in coming years.

This conference with its aim of presenting a perfect blend of two important domains of technology– Nanotechnology and Biotechnology will be a good junction for senior and young researchers, agriculturists, pharmacists, bio-technologists, biologists and related industry specialists to fold together, share experiences, discuss research findings and take the novel knowledge for practical outcomes.
